like it was a rose he was planning to give to his
sweetheart.
The fat man scratching lottery tickets
looked up and grinned, revealing a liftetime of
hygienic neglect. He said to Pete, "You take 'at
jerkey out your mouth and put a rose in it, I bet
you get all the purty gals."
Pete was looking back at the fat man but
kept walking towards the double glass doors to
exit. He didn't notice the sign that read PLEASE
USE OTHER DOOR, and smacked into it.
This set Pete off, who was visibly upset about
something else, but decided to snap at the fat
man.
"How about I light a candle and shove it up
your ass, you pumpkin smile motherfucker."
I apologized to the clerk and patrons and
tossed a dollar bill on the counter for the fat man's
next lottery ticket. The fat man wouldn't smile,
suddenly conscious of his toothless grin for the
first time in twenty-five years, so he nodded in
recognition.
"Drink some beer," I told Pete when we
reached my truck. "It'll calm you down."
"Sorry, Jason," Pete said. "My mood has
nothing to do with the fat man."
He cracked a forty and drank deeply until the
bottle was half-full. The alcohol seemed to have26
