Warriors of Color is a history
book, not in the sense of great battles,
but the history of great men who were
unknown and had little recognition.
This is the story of their lives. Some of
it deals with their military service life,
but the majority of it is about their
struggles to survive after service, and
when they died, their stories did not
end, but continued on through the sto-
ries that their wives related.
These were Buffalo Soldiers who
helped to open up the Westward
expansion of our country, yet our his-

sacrifices.
In compiling this book, people
have asked if the soldiers and their
wives, in their pursuit of a pension,
were discriminated against? I can only
say from what I have read, it was not
discrimination but red tape. You will
notice in each story, all of the men and
women who applied for a pension,
except one man, had a lawyer or
lawyers. How diligent the lawyers
were in pursuing their claims, I cannot
say, except for one case, Mrs. Isaac
Jackson.
While reading this book, you will
note that in many paragraphs you
read, the sentence structure and
spelling is outside the bounds of stan-
dard English composition. Many of
the affidavits and depositions are tran-
scribed as the persons dictated their
feelings, the accounts of that individ-
ual, and the language is the way they
told their story. You must realize,
many of the individuals could only
make a mark or X in signing their
names.
It is important that the reader place
themselves into the lives of the men/
