Acknowledgments
Freda Elizabeth Sayre - Thanks to my wife who has put up with me for forty-one
years and all my hair-brain projects. She spent many a night typing and editing, and
when she got done, she took a trip to Alaska - without me.
National Archives - Thanks to all the men and women who work at the archives
and who have helped me to find information. Also a big thank you to the women and
men who we never meet at the Archives who work in the stacks. Thanks for all your
efforts. Without you, we could not present the history of this great country.
Mike Miere - This is a very unique individual who works at the Archives, and when
I wanted information, he always gave me special attention, although he was over-
whelmed with work. Thanks, Mike.
Mary Williams - The Historian at Fort Davis National Historic Site, Fort Davis,
Texas. Mary helped to create a greater interest and knowledge in this project. Thanks
again, Mary. Now, when will you write a book? Soon, I hope.
Bennie E. Walton & John Craig- Two friends in Washington, D.C., who have
helped me in many ways, checking information, driving me all over D.C. so I would
not get lost. Thanks for all your help.
Bennie J. McRae, Jr. - I first became acquainted with Bennie by phone, and we
finally met at an Elder Hostel at Silver City, New Mexico. We found that our interests
were in the same field - black history. Bennie being very knowledgeable in the different
wars that black troops had served. I was surprised to learn that Bennie published a small
magazine which is very informative and well-documented in the stories that are
presented. If anyone is interested and wants to subscribe, I recommend it highly:

I want to thank all those people who have encouraged me in this project, which is
drawing to a close, but through this research, I have formulated ideas for another book,
so hopefully, I can continue to add to history and especially the field of black history.
