Athletics make
an upward move
By Elizabeth T. Lamb
Managing Editor/The Rambler
in July the coaches began
using the stairmaster method to
commute from their offices.
Formerly located in Sid
Richardson room 103, the coach-
es are now upstairs in Brown
Lupton Campus Center room 222
sharing space with student life.
The move is designed to pro-
vide more interaction between
athletics and student life. Both
departments report to Dave
Voskuil, vice president, division
of student enrollment and ser-
vices.
"The move upstairs will pro-
vide more continuity . for the
coaches and players because
there was no flow downstairs.
Being tucked away at one end of
campus segregated athletics
from the rest of campus. The
coaches now feel as though they
are a more viable part of the uni-
versity," said Rosie Stallman,
director of intercollegiate athlet-
ics.
"The idea for the move was
thrown around for so long, but
I'm sure it started from Dave.
We knew there would be posi-
tives and negatives involved in
the decision, but the positive
benefits were the only reason for
the move," said Stallman.
Another aspect of the move
is more effective recruitment.
Stallman said that all of the
coaches are aggressive
recruiters, and that the new
offices provide a more profes-
sional atmosphere because of the
conference room and. quieter
environment.
"Because we are ranked IS
out of 392 schools in the
National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics
(NA1A), it is extremely impor-
tant to have adequate facilities
for recruitment," said Stallman.
Along with the physical
move, the department is making
minor organizational changes.
All of the coaches, although
responsible for their own activi-
ty are also included in the athlet-
ics department as a whole.
"We're all taking part in the
department. 1 think from this
philosophy starts a sense of
pride and a new way of commu-
nicating. If everyone is involved
and talking, communication
becomes clearer and everyone
has a broader picture of what we
are doing. On Aug. 21, the
department held its first all
coaches meeting, which should
help create a new way of com-
municating," said Stallman.
The coaches meetings will
be on Mondays at 8 p.m. to
accommodate the part-time
coaches.
Because of several personnel
changes in ■ the department,
Stallman said that a large chal-
lenge is getting to know people
well enough to know what their
strengths are.
"I'm excited about the
changes. We want things hap-
pening and this move represents
all of us working together as a
team," said Stallman.

atrium of the Brown Lupton Campus Center.

Lady Rams prepare for
a killer season
By Greg Bogonio!
The Rambler
The Lady Rams' volleyball
team, off a trip to Chattanooga,
Tenn., for the National
Tournament, should be fun and
exciting to watch once again.
The Lady Rams compiled a 33-9
record under fourth-year volley-
ball coach Rosie Stallman.
The Lady Rams' return kill
specialist senior Nan-hee
Aguilar, who had 35 kills in one
game against St. Edwards to
qualify for the 35 plus kill club.
Junior captain, Carmen Biel led
not only the Lady Rams, but the
Heart of Texas Conference in
kills.
Cassie Underwood, who led
in assists, will direct a young
and talented squad. Junior
Misha Hamilton will provide a
"wall" at the net with her block-
ing abilities.
Lori Swartz and Andi Miller
round out the returners who saw
a lot of court action last season!
New players for Stallman
this season are Chris Elf and
freshmen Keri Davis of
Grapevine, Kizzy Wallace, of
Dallas and Marissa Myers of
Alvin.
The Lady Rams finished
third in the Heart of Texas
Conference last season and with
a good core of returning talent
and a powerful freshman class,
the Lady Rams should improve
on last year's finish.
The Lady Rams home open-
er will be Saturday, Sept. 16.
They play Heart of Texas
Conference foe St. Mary's at 2
p.m.
Other September home
games are Wednesday, Sept. 27,
at 7 p.m. against Texas Lutheran
and Saturday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m.
against St. Edwards.

Wesley an's basketball
players receive new
direction
By Dominick Mastrangelo
Sports Editor The Rambler
Direction.
It's hard to find anyone or
anything without, it. Fortune 500
companies have it. So do most
colleges and educational institu-
tions.
Enter Dennis krishka.
krishka was hired last May
as the new men's basketball
coach filling the vacancy left by
Charles Jolley.
krishka comes in with a
tough road ahead trying to direct
the basketball team from the
back roads to the expressway.
Having accepted the job only
three months ago, krishka has
■gone through the process of
mov.ing his family from
Minnesota to Texas and trying to
recruit players for the upcoming
season after entering the recruit-
ing season late.
Fate played a big hand in
krishka's decision to make the
move to the Metroplex.
"I was pretty content with
what I was doing and where 1
was," said krishka, who was
only two years into his tenure at
Hamline University.
"As fate will have it, when
you're scrambling to find a job
and there is nothing out there,
and then all of a sudden. I had
some friends who said 'this is
maybe a position you'd better
take a look at.'"
Having coached only junior
college and NCAA Division III
schools^ all of whom don't offef
scholarships, krishka jumped at
the chance to move up another
step in the coaching ranks.
"This job opportunity really
presented some unique things
like the scholarship situation,"
said krishka, who's had coach-
ing stops at the University of
Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Anoka-
Ramsey Community College and
Spring Lake High School as well
as Hamline.
The chance to tap the high
school talent in the Metroplex
was the second factor for
krishka, who pointed out that
there were only a couple
Division 1 prospects in the
Minneapolis/St. Paul area com-
pared to 25-40 in the Metroplex.
The way the basketball pro-
gram has come apart at the
seams in recent seasons places
much attention on the way the
new regime will turn the pro-
gram around, krishka claims
he's in the best possible situa-
tion as a coach and knows there
are going to be challenges.
"1 think there's an attitude
that -has to be established and a
team personality that has to
come to the fprefront that we
need to get across. If we get our
priorities in order were going to
be fine," said krishka.
krishka pointed out that
there was no timetable but to
make sure that they had a quali-
ty program right from the start.
Establishing a competitive pro-
gram, competitive meaning
challenging for the conference
title is something that krishka
said he doesn't see as taking a
long time.
"After a year under our belts
and a full year of recruiting
we'll know what we need as far
as that one or two players who
can take us to that next level,"
said krishka.
The new coach says he sees
a lot of support from the admin-
istration for the athletic program
and for basketball.
"We've got everything nec-
essary for us to do what we want
to get done," said krishka. "As
long as you have the support
from the people above you
there's really no need to move
on." • krishka said, "that's not
saying that somewhere along the
line that another opportunity
doesn't come along and some-
body's knocking on your door
saying 'hey, this is a nice oppor-
tunity,' but it's not something
I'm looking for at this stage of
the game."
"I'm tired of packing
boxes."
