Growing Pains on
Natural Gas Line
p
Growing pains are quite likely to affect
natural gas companies about this tirr.o. In
the effort to be sure of enough gas for next
winter's demands producing companies haw
"begun tield work, and the activities will con-
tinue into the late fall.
Field activities consist of removing pipe
linos from wells that have died down so f:v
they are no longer commercially usable and
the coupling on of new wells to take theii*
places as well as the drilling of more wells.
(h— i.- i^r-o taken at this time to rcphm
pipe i , .; vn'n out. The effect > I the on
the main.; in some places is very destructive. New
mains are laid to replace those that have pitted or
been victims of ru.it.
In territory where -the chemical action of the soil
is very destructive, these new mains are painted
with a heavy coating that resists chemical action
anil are then carefully wrapped in> heavy paper.
These protections sometimes are quite effective in
delay ins 1 ho pitting of the metal—at other times
and pi tees they seem to have little value.
With the rearrangement of the feed lines from
the wells into the compressor stations, it is some-
times necessary to do a lot of pipe fitting at tho
stations themselves.
This work is done in the summer time both be
cause of the convenience of the outdoor labor at
this time and because, due to the decreased domestic
consumption, it can be done at less inconvenience to
consumers.
