LOUISE 31
heart with an over-flowing love and joy and
peace, that will open up a glorious path before
you-a path that will end in far higher honors
and greater usefulness than the one you chose
for yourself. Louise, will you seek this?
Promise me!"
And Louise, without a shade of feeling in her
voice, answered, " For the sake of the love with
which I have loved you, for the sake of the kindness
that you have shown to me, for the sake of
the memory of the happy hours I have spent
with you, for the sake of the confidence I feel
in you and your religion, I promise!"
The next day as she went home from work
she passed the old Baptist mission that she had
neglected so long. A great placard adorned its
front, Revival services every night. Prayer
meeting every morning at six o'clock." Louise
remembered her promise. " I will rise an hour
earlier in the morning and stop on my way to
work," she resolved.
And she was there. Only a few others gathered
themselves together, but these prayed as
only the faithful few can pray. Louise looked
on with her cold eyes, with her pale, serious
face, but made no sign. She only bowed when
they bowed and rose and said when they asked
her, 'Yes, I am a Christian!" then went on
her way saying within herself, "But what shall
I do with my sins?"
At night she was there again, the same listless,
heartless hearer, listening mechanically for
an answer to the same oft repeated question.
