I do to earn a living for myself? I wish Leah
was here to advise me,-but then I know what
she'd say, Get an education, Rachel.' Father
and mother would say the same if they could
speak to me. I presume I'll have to teach, and
if I do I want to be as perfect, as conscientious,
as successful a teacher as it is possible to make.
But teaching is a hard life?" Then the girl
looked away into the distance, and her eyes
grew dreamy, and the flowers fell from her
lap and lay unheeded, while the visions of fame
and fortune rose before her. Where was their
foundation? In her voice. Her voice was like
the voice of the bird, clear, strong, thrillingly
tender. People called her the nightingale.
Strangers wondered when they heard her sing,
and friends rejoiced, but the home-folks who
loved her most trembled lest this gift of song
should lead her into temptation. Many had
suggested that the voice ought to be trained;
some had even offered to share the expenses of
its training; but the wise father, always shook
his head when the subject was broached, and
answered, I" We will wait and see how the voice
is to be used."
And while they waited the voice grew in
beauty and power, and the whispers of the glory
it might bring reached Rachel's ears and
brought their dreams.
If what they said was true, why need she
drudge for a living! Was not the stage a fairyland,
full of beautiful colors and dazzling lights
and enchanting music and rounds or applause;
