self every necessity,-shoes, hats, new dresses,
-and had saved every dollar of her weekly
earnings. But just as she dropped the last dollar
of the one hundred and four into her
well-filled stocking she heard that Dan was sick,
penniless, among strangers, and snatching her
old bonnet she rushed, slip-shod, to the postoffice
and sent him every dime.
Weeks after that Nan received a penciled
scrawl that fully repaid her for the sacrifice:
Dearest Nan. I'm ashamed of myself. I'll be a man yet
for your sake. Pray for me, Nan.
Yours, Dan.
How could Nan pray for her brother when
she couldn't pray for herself? This thought
worried Nan very much. Back in the days of
their childhood she and Dan had sat on the
same seat and kicked the bench in front of
them, while a patient, weary Sunday School
teacher endeavored to teach them the way of
life. She had learned enough to know that Dan
needed her prayers, to know that she needed a
Savior. In those days she and Dan had learned
a verse-just one, "Come unto me, all ye that
labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you
rest." Did she not labor? Was she not heavy
laden? Yea, and her faith took hold of the
promise, the rest was for her.
But how to obtain the rest was the question.
"Come unto me," Yes, but how? She would
go to church and find out. They were holding
a meeting at the Baptist Church;-Nan knew
