MATTIE 85
"I don't know nothing about verses, granny;
I never learned a verse. I don't know nothing
except about flowers and birds and cotton-rows."
" Then granny must teach you a verse, child.
Sometimes granny's mind wanders and she
can't think of even one. But she knows one
now and you shall learn it, and when she gets
silly again, and her head goes wrong, you shall
say it over and over, and the voice of praise
and trust in her ear shall bring her back her
senses. ' The Lord is my shepherd; I shall
not want.' Say it, child! Learn the sweet
words from your granny's lips; mayhap she
will not live to teach you many more."
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not
want," repeated the child. "Who is the Lord,
granny? "
" The Lord is He who made us all, Mattie;
the one who saves us if we're ever saved; the
one who watches us alive or dead, and knows
our every thought and deed."
"Will He watch where they've planted
mammy and pappy? "
"Yea, child, and He'll watch where they
have planted thee, too. Make the Lord thy
shepherd, Mattie, and then, though thou art
fatherless and motherless thou shalt never
want." Then sounded the call, "Come to
supper?"
