* * * The Compiler and Translator, JOHN ODGEN LEAL, was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1929,
the direct descendant of the first mayor and judge of San Antonio, JUAN LEAL GORAZ, who
came with fifty-five other men, women and children from the Canary Islands in 1731.
Now the Bexar County Archivist, he was curator of the Spanish Governor's Palace, San Antonio,
for four years. A member of the Bexar County Historical Commission, Mr. Leal also holds
membership in the Sons of the Republic of Texas and the Granderos of Galvez.
Mr. Leal has a deep interest in preserving Texas records and served on the 1774 committee to
form the San Antonio Catholic Archives. His interest has led him to translate the records
of the San Fernando Cathedral from 1731 to 1860, records of Mission San Antonio de Valero
(the Alamo) from 1703 to 1784, the records of Mission San Jose from 1775 to 1824, and the
marriages of the Missiion Concepcion from 1731 to 1788.

End of 1834 NOTE: The last name of the women is their surname and not their married
name. This was the custom to list them as such. The reason for such a
short list is because of the conditions of the time in San Antonio.
There was much unrest, whereas the priest was having a difficult time
keeping the records straight. Some of the burials were held at other
places such as private cemetaries or at other mission. The population
of the city had dwindled down and some had started to move out to
ranches and small towns. The people were still having trouble with the
Indians. The name of the tribes are not listed, but most troublesome
were the Apaches and the Comanches.
