Retail and Gross Sales Mixed in Cross Timbers Area

estimates of third quarter 2001 retail and gross sales for
Texas' 254 counties. Cumulative (January-September)
figures from 2000 to 2001, showed variations in retail and
gross sales for the five Cross Timbers counties. Two coun-
ties within the Cross Timbers Area showed increases in
gross sales, and four counties exhibited gains in retail sales.

Erath County was the top performer in gross sales with
an increase of 6.7 percent over the cumulative 2000 figure.
This county showed the second largest retail sales growth
with an increase of 12.7 percent.Comanche County placed second in the gross sales
race last year with an increase of 4.4 percent from the year
before. This county showed a 0.2 percent increase in retail
sales, putting them fourth among area counties for the first
nine months of 2001.
Bosque County posted decreases in both retail and
gross sales during the first three quarters of last year.
Bosque revealed a decrease in gross sales of 1.0 percent in
comparison to the year 2000. This county also showed a
3.7 percent decrease in retail sales.
Hamilton County struggled with a 4.1 percent decrease
in gross sales, but produced an increase of 3.9 percent in
retail sales.
Eastland County also showed weakness, with a de-
crease of 5.4 percent in gross sales. Conversely, this
county produced a 14.1 percent increase in retail sales last
year.
Data collected on Texas counties are reported quarterly
by the State Comptroller's Office. Gross and retail sales
figures are typically released five to six months following
the end of a reporting period.

By Casie AbneyThe State Comptroller's Office recently issued its sales
tax allocation report for the first four months of 2002. This
report indicates that three out of the five major Cross Tim-
bers cities experienced decreases in their sales tax alloca-
tions since 2001. Only two cities showed increases.
Stephenville had the largest sales tax allocation figure
among the major area cities over this period. Its
$1,040,421 figure is 4.0 percent higher than the 2001 total
and is 7.5 percent above the 2000 value.
Comanche was the only other major Cross Timbers
city with an increase in sales tax revenues. Its rebate figure
went from $122,985 in 2001 to $131,930 this year.
Eastland, Dublin, and Hamilton all had decreases in
sales tax receipts. Eastland's allocations were $216,751
through the end of April. Dublin reported in at $68,634,
and Hamilton came in at $97,399.
The State Comptroller's office releases sales tax re-
ports on a monthly basis. According to the April report,
total sales tax allocations to local Texas governments aredown 1.4 percent compared to April 2001. For all of 2002,
local sales tax allocations are down 0.5 percent compared
to the same period last year.
