SENIOR HISTORY
In the year 1909 A. D., just as the lamp of Phoebus pointed
eight-thirty o'clock in the morning of September 8, there was
heard the deep and sonorious voice of an emperor as he extended
the scepter of knowledge over the heads of a shy but smiling
group of little girls, clad in pink checked aprons, and wearing
their hair in pigtails down their backs; also over the heads of
a bashful but boisterous group of little men, who had on their
first pair of breeches made from "Dad's old pair," and big sister's
ribbon for a tie. Little did that Emperor know then that this little
band of pink checked aprons and dad's cast off breeches would
some day "metamorphose" into pink satins and tailored trousers.
For seven winters suns did this little company labor unceasingly in
the fields of knowledge, enduring temperatures varying from zero
to one hundred.
The eighth year found them in the new fields of culture, for
the emperor had found them so patient and steadfast that he or-
dered his overseers to transport them to fields beyond where the
laborers called themselves High School Students. The crops of
Latin, English, History, and Algebra, were difficult to harvest that
year, and many times did they rest their burdens by the wayside
and let their eyes wander up the road and into the fields where
the golden stacks of the Seniors stood gleaming in the sunlight.
Then they sighed like Maud Muller and said "It might have been."
