= THE BURRO
"You might know that is Lee Cash," said "Tub." "Remember how
Coach Frazier had to drill him to keep him from jumping the gun in the
hundred. The next man is 'Dick' Griffin. You know he won the mile race
in the Olympic games year before last."
"You bet I do," said Cooksey. "Congratulations, 'Dick'."
"Hold on," smiled "Tubby." "The next man is 'Whitie' Carter. He
is going to 'State' this year and has a good chance to win the discus throw J
at the Olympics next time."
"Don't weaken, 'Whitie'," advised Cooksey.
"The man opposite you is Lee Cornelius, who is lecturing for the
Lyceum as a humorist. We'll get to hear him tomorrow night."
"Fine!" exclaimed Cooksey.
"You remember the next two, I know-'Pap' Carter and 'Nick' Cren-
shaw."
"I should say so," affirmed Cooksey, "they used to tackle me hard
enough to make my teeth rattle."
"They are on Easy Street now, for they own an oil corporation."
"I was just wondering," interrupted Cooksey, "if Mr. Cornelius would
give a toast to old Mineral Wells High ?"
"With pleasure," responded Lee, "but in a serious mood this time."
"When snow lies thick on Western plains
Or skies are gray with soggy rains-
When love seems dead and worry strains,
Then it is we open the 'Burro' of '22'
And old acquaintances renew.
The old hope rises from the past,
And love and courage return at last."
When Lee had finished we saw a great applause and the last misty
vapor which had taken the form of each speaker's words evaporated and
the picture faded from sight, leaving Leckie and I gazing into the crystal
ball.
"Well, are you convinced at last ?" asked Leckie, seriously.
"Just about," I replied. "Suppose we both meet at the Texas Hotel in
1930 and see if it really happens."
"All right," agreed Leckie, "I'll be there."
