TRACK MEET RECORDS
As we go to press the track team has participated in four meets
and has before it the state meet at Austin, May 3 and 4.
The first meet attended was the Fat Stock Show meet at Fort
Worth. Here Wayne Courter distinguished himself by winning the
pole vault. The other men gained much valuable experience, David
Miller coming in fifth in the open two-mile run.
Mineral Wells High did not have enough material to defeat the
strong team from Strawn. The record that it made, under the cir-
cumstances, was remarkable. Seven firsts, six seconds, four thirds,
and five fourths were won by the Mineral Wells High athletes. Leon
Smith was high point man for the seniors, winning first in the broad
jump, fourth in the shot put, fourth in the 440 dash, and being a
member of the relay team, which won first place. His points totalled
81/4. Ben Yeager was the star for the Juniors, winning first in the
50-yard dash, first in high jump, first in broad jump and second in the
100-yard dash, making a grand total of 17 points.
At the Baylor meet, which was directed by an ex-Mineral Wells
High coach, the team did not do as well as had been expected. Wayne
Courter won third in the pole vault, and Frank Griffin, in an ex-
tremely fast mile race in which there were twenty entries, won
fourth place. He finished about twenty feet behind the winner.
The district meet at Denton proved a great surprise for the fol-
lowers of Mineral Wells High School athletics. Victor Bouldin, who
had tied for third place at the county, ran away with the elimination
in the 220 low hurdles, and won second in the finals. Wayne Courter
and Duval West tied for second place in the pole vault. It was un-
fortunate that Frank Griffin was not able to make the trip, since he
could have easily walked away with the mile race, but circumstances
prohibited his going.
We are looking forward to winning two places in the state and are
confident that we will do so.
