i iTHE VANITY CONTEST
The year of 1922-23 in Mineral Wells Hi School witnessed the
most exciting and thrilling race ever known. For several years the
High School has conducted a contest along the same line, but never
has it been so successful as this year's Vanity Contest.
Votes were cast by the thousands and the Juniors and Seniors
became bitter opponents. One never knew at what turn he might be
assailed by a villainous Junior or Senior. Every one was aroused and
his soul stirred to action.
The contest was hardly started until the latter part of the week,
then votes began pouring in, and "things began to hum." Interests
began to grow and it was soon realized that the race for the "best
all-round boy" would be the "hottest." At the beginning of the second
week everyone was up and doing for his candidate. Impromptu
speeches were made from the stairs and on the school ground; posters
were placed all around the school building; it was advertised in the
daily papers, and the town people were becoming enthusiastic.
Toward the last everyone was on his tip-toes with excitement.
The votes for each candidate were read from the hall stairs three
times daily. The Juniors he'd secret meetings and took subscriptions;
the Seniors, unable to put their candidates over, borrowed money.
Voting boxes were placed down town and the election returns flashed
en the screens of the leading theatres. The time was ripe for a touch-
down. Nerves were on the breaking point and the speeches became
flowery, pleading, snappy-anything for a vote! The Junior candidates were in the lead up to the last-then slump!
The Seniors had borrowed and hoarded their money for a touchdown.
All of their candidates but one were put "over the top" with flying
colors. The other honor went to the Fish. Their idol, "Fat" Thomas,
was elected.
"To the victors, belong the spoils."
