FROM NINE TO FOUR
At nine o'clock she enters the study hall and the day begins.
"Hey, there, save me a seat! Joshh, stay off me! Why don't you watch where
you are going? XVhat did you say, 'as big as they are, you can't stay off them'? Say,
let me tell you something-if I had feet like yours, I'd go- . Shhhhh ! Here
comes the teacher. Gimme a book, quick!"
Silence. Then: "Ssst, look at the dress that the teacher has on. WVouldn't you
s'pose she'd have more sense than to mix blue and tan ? Now the dress Mary has on
is perfectly beautiful, I think; don't you? WVhat, you don't? WVell, guess I'm just
partial to green and yellow." She gazes around. "Say, who is that boy over there?
He's new, isn't he?" She chews her gum vigorously and says admiringly: "Vell,
all I gotta say is, I never thought I'd see the day when old M1ineral WVells High would
put out boys like that."
Another silence. "This is the deadest study hall I ever saw. WVhy, honestly, I
believe some of these kids come in here to study. And the way :Iiss Brewer glares
at- . Gosh! she saw me talking and here she comes!" She grabs a book, opens it
upside down, and begins to study.
"Talking? Who? Me? No'm, I wasn't talking; I was reading out loud."
"The nerve! Did she really think I'd tell her? What's that? I should have told
her? And got a week in detention hall? Huh, not me! Mercy! Is that the bell? I
haven't had time to study my history one bit."
In history class: "I)o you know your lesson ?" "I)o I? Don't make me laugh.
Did I ever? Here she comes. Lend me a pencil, will you; I forgot mine. You
don't have one? Well, why don't you ?" She turns to the girl back of her, who says:
"D)o you know, I believe she said that because you borrowed her pencil and did not
return it." "Pooh! As if I wanted her old pencil! Oh, I beg your pardon, 1 didn't
hear your question. WVill you repeat it? Huh! she needn't have been so snooty
about it; acts as if I should hear everything she says. Oh, there goes that new boy!"
She jumps up to get a better look. As the teacher looks at her, she sits down
hastily and when her back is turned, she makes a mouth at her, only to find that the
teacher is again looking at her. Out of that class, she breathes a sigh of relief, and all
through the day she is just "worked to death." Then comes that hour to which she
has been looking forward-four o'clock.
She rushes into home room, late as usual, to hear the teacher say: "These stu-
dents will report to detention hall."
"Well, I like that!" she exclaims on hearing her name. "What have I done? It's
getting so you can't even breathe without someone stopping you. It makes me tired !"
Retta: "Savern ate something at Hi-Y banquet that poisoned him."
Clara: "Croquette?"
Retta: "No, not yet; but he's pretty sick."-- -> b " Y*--
