TALK FAST
Prescott, Ark. — A certain New
York private, name withheld, will
be his own mail man from now
on.. - "' "J
Travelling with the New York
27th Division to Second Army
Maneuvers, the soldier met a
young lady in;ColMtnbus, Miss.,
when troops stopped' overnight-
He pi^mised to write and send a
pamphlet describing the war
games.
At the next pause in Greenville,
Miss., he scribbled a note to his
new acquaintance, enclosing -the
pamphlet, and also wrote a letter
to the best girl back home- Hav-
ing no envelopes, he asked a fel-
low soldier to get them in town
and mail the letters;
His friend unknowingly put the
letters in the wrong envelopes.
Yesterday the private received an
answer from his girl friend. En-
closed -was the pamphlet and a
curt note: "Dear Casanova: Talk
yourself • out of this one if you
can,"

■IDE YOUR INTENTIONS
ONE fundamental of strategy,
n any kind of contest. Is to con-
:dal your Intentions, to keep the
inemy from knowing what you
ire preparing to do. Carried to
high degree, this amounts to de«
llberately misleading Kim and
making him definitely count on
you for something entirely differ-
ent from your true plan. If you
can mcke him expect Just the re-
verse of what you intend to try,
then you have attained the zenith
in this respect—or the pinnacle^ if
-you prefer that term.

North waa a demure little lady
Whose husband is known aa one
Of the game's stark, hot whose
opponents dtdl not SKpect any-
thing very trtdqf Tmrn hsr. So,
after Beet led the heaf. 0 to Mm
J and A. she went, to the dummy
with the diamond 8 to the Q and
led the spade 0 to the Q and K,
Kaat knew ahe was trying to drop
the trumps. Refusing to oblige her
with a trump return, he ftred back
a heart. West took two tricks In
that suit and shifted to the club
K, East signaling, for a repeat
with the J. The Q then was ruffed,
the diamond K scored, a third"
round club was ruffed, the dia-
mond 10 ruffed with the spade J
and over-ruffed by the A. Weat ra*
turned the heart 7, ruffed by the
spade 0. The spade 10 and dia-
mond A then accounted for the
last two tricks.
By leading spades herself, alha
had kept the opponents from lead-
ing them. Had they done so, when
they got in. and taken out the
dummy's three trumps, she would
ham had to lose six triclan-two.

ruff of the diamond 10 saved a
