SHORT
SERMONS
By

SHEPHERD
Marriage is not an institution
originated by , or belonging to,
society, state, or nation. Society
did not originate marriage. It
only found marriage as an or-
dinance of God himself based up-
on His primal laws. He joined
the first couple, and He joins
every other pair that is joined
legally according or His law al-
lows. See Genesis 2:24. Matthew
19:4-6.
Nor did God give marriage to
the State as an economic corner-
stone which the State may regu-
late as the changing thinking of
society or human conduct dic-
tates. It is not something that
Society or the State may replace
as a thing outgrown,deteriorated,
or become useless.
Marriage is not a mere legal
contract which may be dissolved
at the will of the contracting
parties. It is not a union of
mutual passion and convenience
that may be severed by mutual
consent once the original flame
has become cold or dead.
Marriage is not even a Church
institution, sacrament, or ordi-
nance, which the church, either
Roman Catholic or Protestant,
makes binding. Marriage cere-
monies performed by either
civil or religious servants are
simply a public ratifying of a
private agreement. A making
binding according to Civil Law
the act of God in Heaven.
The SWEETWATER CHURCH
OF CHRIST salutes you.
