BOYS' LIFE IN THE TROOP
PROGRAM
January—the first month in the, new
year! : !
To the ancient Romans, the Latin deity
Janus (from which January is derived)
was the god of gates and doors, hence the
god of all beginnings. We are not ancient
Romans but wide awake Scoutmasters.
January, nevertheless, means much the
same to us, the beginning of another Scout-
ing year.
We all want to improve our program
over last year. We need variety, new
ideas, additional leadership and weak spots
strengthened. We need to use all the
available helps.
A ten minute discussion of BOYS' LIFE
once each month is an available help not
to be overlooked. Let's strengthen the
interest of one of our Troop Committee-
men by asking him to conduct this dis-
cussion. Request him to ask the Troop
some of the questions listed below, by way
of starting the discussion and tying BOYS'
LIFE a little closer to the Troop pro-
gram.
MISSISSIPPI MILES
By J. Allan Dunn
(BOYS' LIFE—page 28)
What kind of birch tree was used
by the voycigeur in making a canoe
for Miles and Wild Bill?
Why was that particular tree used?
THE STOLEN AIRPLANE
By Edward J. Morrow
(BOYS' LIFE—page 18)
Why, in your opinion, were Ding
Palmer, Fuzzie Stout and Shrimp
Barker so anxious to continue their
operations as Air Detectives, Incor-
porated ?
What Scout requirements were em-
ployed by these fellows in their suc-
cessful recovery of the stolen plane ?
WHAT SCHOOL IS BEST?
By Myron D. Stearns
(BOYS' LIFE—page 3)
Do you believe that Jud Kennedy
should go to college after finishing
High School ? Why ?
Are you planning to go to College?
Why?
Note: We urge that every Scout-
master encourage his Scouts to read
this article by Mr. Stearns.
THE COME BACK OF IRISH
By E. B. Darling
(BOYS' LIFE—page 6)
What is necessary, in a dog, to make
possible a development of the fine
qualities displayed by Irish? Do you
know of any such dog—or other
animal ?
WHAT'S NEW IN THE NEWS
(BOYS' LIFE—page 26)
How long do you figure it took
Boyd Jones of Amarillo, Texas to
ride his horse all the way from his
home to New York City?
If you were planning an "obstacle"
bicycle race what obstacles would
vou include ?
THE AXE
(BOYS' LIFE—page 54)
Axe handicraft is an important
Scouting requirement.
Why is this true?
How many reasons can you give to
qualify your statement ?
"A cheery disposition is like a balloon
tire. The rougher the road, the more you
need it."

"Inspeck-sh-u-un... kits!"
The Scout's first aid kit is no better than its contents. It was
right once—but you know how boys are. Mending hockey sticks
has used up a lot of adhesive plaster. Curiosity to "see how it
works" has probably accounted for some mercurochrome swabs.
How about a Kit Inspection? Make a check-list of all items in
the kit, see how many of each are needed, then write up a com-
posite order to replace the missing. Most good druggists can fill
it for you; or you can order from the Supply Department.

or Bugle Corps
SCOUT bands are being organized everywhere. Many
of them will contribute to the success of Anniversary
Week celebrations this year. A band brings new interest
to all scout activities, improves discipline, develops men-
tal alertness and cultivates valuable musical talent.
Why not get the band movement under way in your
council now? Be ready for Anniversary Week next year
and for the countless other occasions when a band will
mean so much to your boys.
New Plan Makes It Easy
In co-operation with national scout executives, Conn has worked
out a plan which takes all the uncertainty and hard work out of
organizing. Factory experts take care of every detail. You can start
with beginners and have a playing band in 60 to 90 days. This
plan is fully proven. It's ready to produce a successful band for you
as it has for so many others.
