sessed the simplicity that charac-
terized all of his relationships.
Only a great soul could have de-
dicated himself as he did to the
service and upbuilding of youth.
Following is the citation which
accompanied the Silver Buffalo
Award.
CITATION
JOHN H. FINLEY, author, edu-
cator, editor, some time President
of Knox College and the College
of the City of New York, Profes-
sor of Politics at Princeton Uni-
versity, Commissioner of Educa-
tion and President of the Univer-
sity of the State of New York, and
since 1921 Associate Editor of The
New York Times. He has been
decorated by eight foreign govern-
ments. His book, "The French in
the Heart of America" was
crowned by the Academie Fran-
caise and awarded the Gold Medal
of the Geographical Society, Paris.
He has been a member of the
Executive Board of the National
Council Boy Scouts of America
since 1921, and for nine years
Chairman of its Committee on
Education. He is the founder of
the Junior American Red Cross
and prominently identified with
numerous social, educational and
scientific organizations in this
country and abroad. He-has de-
voted a lifetime to the spiritual,
mental and physical up-building
of boys and the furtherance of in-
ternational friendship and good-
will. On more than one occasion he
has been chosen to represent the
Youth of America. His personal
relations and public utterances
have been an unfailing source of
inspiration to boys and their
leaders.
