To Serve Scoutmasters
(Continued from page 9)
type of country, from burning des-
ert to snow-capped mountain top,
from sea shore, lake shore, river
shore to the vast dry stretches of
the high prairie; all these are our
American inheritance. This nation
is large in area and in opportuni-
ties.
Nothing, absolutely nothing,
should prevent every Scout's try-
ing a bit of adventure. Adventure
becomes possible when you pitch
a tent out "beyond somewhere."
The "somewhere" doesn't partic-
ularly matter. It must be out—
somewhere away from home.
Green Bar Bill
Right along this line of getting
out and going camping there are
many ideas worked out by Green
Bar Bill on page 20. He recom-
mends the chapter on Camping in
the Handbook for Patrol Leaders
as a basic bit of reading to start
your Patrols going.
He gives your Patrol Leaders
many ideas and photographs to
help them on their way.
Boomerangs and neckerchief
slides give you a lot of ideas for
Troop and Patrol handicrafts and
skills.
"Boomerangs" (page 22) can be
made from crooked branches.
Hickory is especially good, long
lasting and tough.
There are two secrets necessary
to make them work. These are
told in pictures and text in Boys'
Life.
Neckerchief Slides
Here (page 21) are 35 different
varieties made from all manner of
material; wood, bone, backbones,
fish bones, shell, aluminums,
leather, beads, real arrow points,
real beetles, and other materials
too numerous to mention.
How to whittle an Indian Head
slide is shown in pictures.
