activities popular In 2. F[. S.
Activities have an important place in Pampa Senior High School. Few schools our size can
boast such variety or so great an interest in extracurricular activities.
Balanced participation in activities is regarded as being as essential a part of a student's school
life as class work. Requirements for graduation include taking part in at least one activity during
each year in high school. Participation in activities is recognized and rewarded as a form of service
to the school. All faculty members assist in directing some activity.
Most activities grow out of the work of certain classes or departments, but in addition serve in
an extracurricular capacity. Only those groups meeting outside of class hours or representing the school
before the public through contests, programs, etc., are included in the annual.
Varied interests and talents of students are given expression through the many activities of Pampa
Senior High School. A well rounded sports program is provided all year, as evidenced by the
preceding section of this book. Athletic events are enlivened by the band and pep squad. Musical
organizations include band, orchestra, a cappella choir, boys' and girls' glee clubs, and quartets.
Training in dramatics and public speaking is given through school plays and participation in the
Interscholastic League contests in declamation, extemporaneous speech, debate, and one-act play.
Literary development is encouraged through spelling and essay contests and the Latin tournament,
while work on the staffs of the school paper and annual provides journalistic expression. Students
serve as assistants in the library and in the registrar's office. Business training is gained through the
shorthand, typing, and bookkeeping teams which compete with other schools. Clubs in connection
with the home economics and agriculture departments are vocational in nature. Training in self-
government is offered through the student council. Special recognition of leadership is given through
election to the National Honor Society.
The picture on the opposite page is characteristic of the big way in which Pampa Senior High
School does things. Here the Harvester Band and Pep Squad are shown performing with the Sandie
Band and Pep Squad between halves of the Pampa-Amarillo game. About fifteen thousand people
witnessed this football classic of the Panhandle.
