Central American Troubles.
From the Washington Post.
If a vigorous man found two boys
fighting on a lot adjoining his premises
should he pull them apart and send
them home or go on his way and leave
thorn to fight it out' has he any
right or is It his duty to interfere?
Different men would answer the ques-
tion ilifferontly and act accordingly.
If he saw reason to belleva that his
own property was in danger of being
trampled and injured he would not
hesitate to act but to mix in simply on
the ground of humanity is another
thing. About tha tappears to be the
situation as regards the Unltei' Slates
and the Central American countries
now engaged in mauling each other
Sovereign States have an undoubted
right to engage in combat so long as
they observe the rules of the ring nnd
do not overstep the law of nations In
the injury they indict on others and
though It Is sorry spectnele to see two
countries who should know better and
who have no real cause to quarrel
flying at each other's throats with ev-
ery evidence of homicidal fur it is
hard to see exactly what right we have
to stop it by othor moans than persun-
sion. Not long since we Joined with
MpxIco in persuading them to quit and
they quited down and seemed to be
911 the best of terms but now they aro
at it again and It ls suggested that we
and Mexico go In and pull them apart.
Marines have already been landed at
points where American Interests arc?
endangered and there will probably
bo no protest against such actlou.
Possibly If we unltod with Mexico
telling them thoy must call the quarrol
off they might go home but It ls to
be hoped wo shall not feel called on
to go beyond that
Wo have Cuba on our hands already
and If we aro going to undertake to
police the entlro region south of ns
wo aro likely to have our hands full.
It Is of course possible that tho at-
titude of some of the bQllIgerrmts may
become so dlsregardful of our rights
as to compel us to Intorfore or tho
responsibility vfhlch tho Monroo doc-
