tho pulp 1b ntndo is fast being ex-
hausted and It would requlro years
of forest cultivation to supply tho
trees which lmvo been used In tho
manufacture Of the tons of pnpors dal-
ly consumed In this and othor coun-
tries. Unless vast forests of tho wood
aro dlscoVorcd hi some remote qiinr-
tor of tho globo within a verj short
time n new mntorial must bo used to
supply tho presses of tho world.
Wood pulp hits nindo printing so
choap that It will not he possiblo to
roturnto fibers used boforo discovery
that wood pulp would mnko a satis-
factory quality of "news." In the
search for n substitute for the wood
many different materials huvo been
suggested but for one reason or an-
other obstacles lmvo presontcd them-
selves to Its manufacture- The mate-
rial to bo used muBt be cheap and bo
of almost unlimited quantity to moot
tho demands or tho market. Tho lov-
cliiiR of forest after forest to supply
the domain! indicates tho necessity for
a bountiful supply of tho mntorlnl
boforo capital will he Invested In
mills to turn it into paper. It is grat-
ifying thoreforo to know that a corpo-
ration has been organized in the East
to go into tho manufacture of paper
pulp from rice and wheat straw. There
Is no obstnelo whatever in the way of
the manufacture of paper from theso
materials or at least one of them for
paper has been manufactured from
rice straw for years. Tho only thing
to be consideieil in this connection so
far as rice stiaw is concerned. Is tho
financial problem of making u papei
at such cost as to be able to compete
with wood pulp paper Twenty years
and more "ago one of tho principal pa-
pers in tills country was pilnted on
rice paper and the quality of tho ma-
terial was the envj of other competi-
tors It would appear to the unin-
formed that it rice straw can be used
for tills puipose wheat straw might
also be utilized and there Is grown an"
nually enough of this material to sup-
ply the demand of the world. The
qualitv of tho paper is hotter than that
made fiom wood pulp and if It can
be manufactured at about tho same
price the now company will soon have
all tho customers It can supply. Be
sides thp advantage to tho printing
trade growing out of tho now depart-
ure the farming community will find
a souice of profit in what is now a
useless material save what can be
used in the bedding of cattle.
The Eastern corporation proposes
only to manufacture tho pulp fiom
the straw nnd is already contracting
with paper mills throughout the coun-
try to supply them with sufficient of
the pull) to keep their wheels going.
Many mills in tho Northwest have al-
ready been compelled to shut down
becaubo of the scarcity of wood pulp
which is' steadily advancing in pi ice
as tho supply diminishes. The now
material will supply these mills and
if tlie venturo should prove profitable
thore Is no reason to dougbt that
eventually all tho "news" consumed in
this country will bo manufactured from
straw tho supply of which Is constant-
ly Inci easing with thcyenrs.
U. A. Ayres remarked this morning
thnt he had thought that the advance
In price of the dally edition of this
paper put it out of his reach but that
Mrs. Ares says that they can not do
without it nnd so it goes again
