PACK MEETING DERBY
The Pack Meeting in July is a "Things That Go"
Derby — roll a hoop, tire, pushmobile, or scooter.
Of course, this can be expanded or changed to in-
clude sailboats, paddle boats, kites, stilts, gliders,
etc.
The Pack committee has worked in advance and
the location has long ago been approved. They and
other fathers now arrive early to set up the neces-
sary stands and equipment to line up the course.
While the Cub Scouts and Parents Gather: As
the Cub Scouts arrive with their equipment, have
them assemble by Dens in designated areas. Have
available some tables or a roped off area where
the individual Cub Scout projects can be displayed
for all to see.
Separate Meetings
Boys' Meeting: Cub Scouts meet by Dens to
check equipment and line up for the opening
parade.
Parents' Meeting: While the boys are prepar-
ing for the afternoon events, parents assemble in-
formally to discuss any Pack activities and the next
month's theme.
The Derby
Open with a grand parade — all Cub Scouts
carrying their "Things That Go" projects. It might
be possible to have a Flag Raising Ceremony with
the "Star Spangled Banner" played on a public ad-
dress system or record player. Then with the head
starter and judges in place, the announcer calls
for the first event.
It might be best to run the races in heats with
one boy from each Den in each heat. Hold a hoop
race, a tire race, a scooter race. Have a special
event for dads (let them roll tires) and have the
mothers try rolling the hoops. Have a pony express
relay by Dens, using scooters around a circular
course. If it looks feasible, let the boys try scooter
polo. (The Committee can draw up the rules early
in the month for this.)
Scoring Suggestions: If there are five Dens, make
it possible for every boy to earn some points for
his Den by scoring as follows: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 for all
heats. In the finale score 10, 8, 6, 4, 2.
Award Ceremony: At this time recognize in some
simple way the winners of the different events.
Present any badges that have been earned during
the month.
To Eat or Not to Eat: It's up to you. You may
wish to conclude with a Pack pot luck picnic on a
family or Den basis or you may decide to close the
affair by giving everybody a treat of ice cream,
soda pop, or hot dog.
