AN IDEA
See your Scout Executive about attending the
National Cub Scout Leaders' Conference at Phil-
mont. Plan your family vacation for Philmont.
During the year 1951, 402,877 boys dropped out
of Cub Scouting. This represents 41.3% of all the
boys who had an opportunity to reregister. We
should expect to drop about one third of our boys
because of graduations. But the other 8% or 77,964
left before graduation time.
Scout Executive, John Fern, mentioned in a
letter to Cub Scouting Service a real active Pack
in the William Penn Council, with parent attend-
ance running about 98 percent. He suggests the fol-
lowing letter written by their Cubmaster D. H.
Blair, and an introduction meeting for new parents
might have something to do with it.
Every mother of a boy in your Den is a potential
Assistant Den Mother who can someday take over
for you. Try inviting a different mother to assist
you each month. You'll soon know which one is
the most capable.
Do you have a definite plan that works to grad-
uate your Cub Scouts into a Scout Troop? Describe
it briefly and send it to the Cub Scouting Service, 2
Park Avenue, New York 16, N. Y.
Do the leaders, parents and friends in your
community understand that Cub Scouting is not a
program for boys but that it is a family program
designed for parents to use with their boys? It is
this family, home-centered emphasis that has
gained it such national favor.
Scouting Magazine is mailed to all registered
Cub leaders without added charge. It is also avail-
able to unregistered Den Mothers at a special rate
of 50c a year. All other unregistered adults who de-
sire this magazine, may obtain it at $1.00 a year.
Subscriptions should be sent to your Local Council
Office.
Do you know about the small pocket-sized Cub
Scouting Guidebook (Cat. No. 3822) ? It is an excel-
lent quick reference for all leaders on How Cub
Scouting Works, Advancement, Den and Pack
Meetings, financing your Pack, etc. "Only a nickel."
Do you have that Gold Star in your crown for
reviving the interest of Johnny Doe who wanted to
quit? The record indicates too many boys slipped
away last year. Don't relax your efforts to hold
their interest. If every Den Mother saved one boy
from dropping, the total would be improved by
approximately 100,000. Perhaps these figures show-
ing the national standing of Cub Scouting would
interest you.
TO MOM AND DAD:
"This Parent's Book is your official introduction
and guide to Cub Scouting. You will enjoy reading
it aloud together — and before next week. It
describes the interesting experience that awaits
you and your boy.
"This is the threshold to America's greatest pro-
gram of practical guidance toward a richer home
life and future citizenship. It begins with Cub
Scouting which includes you (the parents) every
step of the way with your boy. Later you will stand
aside a bit when Boy Scouting begins to develop
his knowledge and skills for self-reliance. Still
later when he becomes an Explorer, you will appear
on the side lines advising him when he asks your
help but being grateful for these earlier opportu-
nities to work with him.
"Whatever you may have heard or seen of the
three phases of Scouting, remember this program is
a tested product of the combined efforts of the best
authorities throughout our Nation and the World.
Whatever we have done or not done to make the
most of it, is entirely a product of our own will-
ingness and application to work together as parents.
In Pack 29, we aim to achieve exactly that sincere,
cooperative, and unselfish effort so every family
can realize fruitful returns.
"Nobody can do a job well unless he understands
it, nor will he ever try if he isn't really sold on it.
That's why to begin with we require thorough read-
ing and study of this little book by every parent
(both mother and father) before they appear to-
gether accompanied by their son at our meeting for
induction and registration. We shall ask each parent
individually to make a solemn pledge of his and
her willingness to enter into both the spirit and
acceptance of practical duties assigned them. All
who accept and agree to uphold such a part in
Pack 29 are cordially welcomed.
"On Monday, October 22nd at 7:30 p.m. in the
First Presbyterian Church basement we shall hold
our Induction and Registration meeting for new
Cub Scouts, accompanied by both parents who are
prepared as explained. The meeting should not last
more than an hour. Parents who find it impossible
to be present that evening but wish to enroll should
call the Cubmaster, D. Hall Blair, Phone 95,
promptly."
