Camping For All It's Worth by
William E. Swanson, The Macmil-
lan Co., 60 Fifth Ave., New York
(11), N. Y. $2.95
William Swanson is the author
of the popular book for outdoor
people "Log Cabins." Being an art-
ist as well as a camper, it is natural
to find this new book illustrated on
just about every page. Campers will
at once realize that there is no pad-
ding here; it is packed with prac-
tical advice.
The 16 chapters include valuable
tips on such diverse subjects as hik-
ing, auto travel with trailers, types
of tents, lean-tos, numerous draw-
ings of lodges and cabins, heating
and lighting of camp structures,
food, medical care, fishing, sanita-
tion, sleeping bags, protection of
camp against bears and other ani-
mals, use of boats and cooking fires.
Leaders of Scouts and Explorers
will want to add this book to their
bookshelf, but it's a safe bet that it
will wind up in some camper's
pocket, and become well-worn.
The Art of the Story-Teller by
Marie L. Shedlock, Dover Publica-
tions, Inc., 1780 Broadway, New
York (9), N. Y. $3.50
This new edition of a well-known
book will be useful to all leaders
of Scouts and Cub Scouts, especially
Den Mothers. Included are a num-
ber of audience-tested short stories
that have been selected with excel-
lent judgment. These stories would
be good around the campfire; the
whole book is full of fine, practical
advice to story-tellers. It also in-
cludes a first-rate bibliography of
good stories.
Story-telling is a dramatic art in
itself and this book, written by a
great artist in this field, cannot
be too highly recommended. Den
Mothers in particular, please take
notice.
