Take a trip to a state prison or
reformatory. Interview the in-
mates. Ask them how they came
to be where they are. The answers
vary. Some blame their present pre-
dicament on their mother or father.
Others on an older confederate who
enticed them. Still others, on a dis-
solute wife or girl friend. But these
answers have one thing uniformly in
common: No prisoner blames himself.
If we are to come to grips realistic-
ally with the problem of crime and
delinquency among our youth, we
must start with a clear-cut reaffirma-
tion of the principle of individual
responsibility. We must reject the
notion that we are like corks tossed
u
by the waves of the sea. helpless to
determine our course of conduct.

Automatic forgiveness is not a
kindness; and rationalization of mis-
behavior often does the child more
harm than good. For youths have a
moral sense; sometimes stronger than
their elders. They can understand a
punishment world, and they should
he allowed to participate in it. Youth
must face up.
