LAST LEAF
Rick Pierce
Hold on, Hold on.
The wind is blowing the branch that's shaking
Me, the Last Leaf Aloft.
I'm high: On the highest part of the highest
Branch in the highest tree, on the highest hill,
I see the world in microcosm.
Far, Far below they lie.
Those fallen from grace.
I see them rotting, quietly dying
Till tortuously tossed by fitful flying
Turning, twisting, always trying to watch me,
To be witnesses to my coming down.
Strength flows from me.
Osmotic exodus from the wastefulness
Of my going.
I dry, I thirst, each cell hungers for
What is gone and will not return.
I dry, I thirst, I brown with hues of
My ending.
Hold on, Hold on.
