First Christian Church of Port Arthur

The church, which is part of the Disciples of Christ, has been in Port Arthur since 1904. In addition to the important role they play in their community, the church is known for famous musician Janis Joplin, who sang with the youth choir in the early 1950s. They received a Rescuing Texas History grant in 2007 to aid in digitization.

Notes

"10 3/4 inches by 6 3/4 inches, brown tone image, taken on steps of First Christian Church about 1930. Church located on southeast corner of 5th Street at Beaumont Avenue, Port Arthur, Texas (700 Fifth Street.) The small girl standing on the front row with dark hair and 'kitty-cat' pockets on her dress is Jane Stanley. On her left is her sister, Patsy Stanley. No positive I.D. on others in photo."
