MOV,
FEB,U,
find the boys' interest flagging after a
couple of weeks' work on one activity
badge, move to another. Your concern
should be that your Webelos Scouts
remain interested, are earning badges,
and are having fun.
Some Webelos den leaders have
found that a few activity badges
(Scholar, Sportsman, and Traveler, for
example) can be well covered in a cou-
ple of weeks, while others (Craftsman
and, perhaps, Naturalist) may require
five or six weeks to complete. Adapt
your den's plans to fit. Think of these
Helps as guides, not dogma.
You will note that a particular ac-
tivity badge is recommended for each
month of this program year (September
1980 through August 1981). There is
nothing sacred about the order; if you
want to change, do so.
But there's a "but." At your district's
monthly Cub Scout leaders' roundtable,
ideas will be given for the following
month's recommended activity badge,
and that means you will have many
more program ideas to work with. If
you decide to feature some other ac-
tivity badge, you will get no specific
program ideas for it at the roundtable.
Each of the first 12 den meeting out-
lines in this booklet is tied to the Cub
Scout theme for the month. If you are
not going to use the recommended ac-
tivity badge for that month, be sure you
know your pack's theme and pack
meeting highlight so that your Webelos
Scouts will be prepared for the pack
meeting.
For example, in May the Cub Scout
theme will be "Under the Big Top."
There will be two pack highlights—a
circus and a bike rodeo. The recom-
mended activity badge for that month is
Scholar, and the den meeting outline
includes practice for the bike rodeo and
suggestions on planning a den act for
the circus. If you use some other activi-
ty badge in May, be sure that you work
in some bicycling practice and an act
for the pack circus.
Throughout these Helps, you will
find occasional references to Cub Scout
Program Helps, which includes sug-
gested programs for pack meetings (and
for Cub Scout den meetings) and goes to
your Cubmaster and his assistants, Cub
Scout den leaders and assistants, the
den leader coach, and your unit or pack
commissioner.
Ask the Cubmaster to fill you in on
the things you should know to coordi-
nate your den's activities with the
pack's program.
YOUR ASSISTANTS. A Webelos den
should have two adult leaders—the den
leader and one assistant. This is
especially important because if one of
them is ill or out of town, the other can
handle den meetings.
The den should also have a den
chief—a Boy Scout who helps run
games, teaches Scout skills, and assists
the adult leaders in other ways. If your
den does not have a den chief, check
with your Cubmaster and the Scout-
master of a nearby troop to recruit one.
Other adults can also contribute
much to the den program. Among them
are the troop Webelos resource person
and activity badge counselors.
Troop Webelos Resource Person—the
individual who maintains liaison
between your den and the Boy Scout
troop that takes your Webelos Scouts
when they reach 11 years of age and
graduate from the pack.
The troop Webelos resource person is
appointed by the Scout troop commit-
tee. Probably he will be an assistant
Scoutmaster or troop committee
member. His job is to coordinate joint
troop-den events and to help your
Webelos Scouts learn Boy Scout skills
to prepare for their entry into the troop.
