Scouting in Russia (from page 18)
compete in a knot relay.
During a shopping visit at a depart-
ment store, the Olympia Scouts have
a chance encounter with Michelle Wil-
liams and her mother, Joyce, whose
family from Utah is living in Vladi-
vostok for two years. The Williamses
have six boys who were involved in
Boy Scouts in the States, and the two
explain how much the boys miss
Scouting.
Don Ireland, the Troop 266 dad
who organized the Russian trip, im-
mediately introduces the Williamses
from Utah to Sergei and Irina—lead-
ers of the Boy Scout troop in Vladi-
vostok.
"Where have you been?'
When Troop 266 eventually heads
home to America on Alaska Airlines,
Greg Ireland and his fellow Scouts
don't realize what a success their mis-
sion has been.
In the next few months, several
Russian newspapers will feature the
Scouts from the Lutheran Church of
the Good Shepherd in Olympia. Televi-
sion and radio stations, too, will re-
port on Troop 266's telling of the
Scouting story.
And after broadcasting a documen-
tary about the American Boy Scouts
coming to Khabarovsk, a Russian
television station will receive many
phone calls from Russian people, ask-
ing about this youth program called
Boy Scouts. To top it off, the trip will
spawn a return visit of Russian boys
to Olympia later in the year.
During the return flight, though,
the significance of the Scouts and
their good-will mission comes to life
through an encounter in the passen-
ger cabin.
High above the snow-plastered
Russian Arctic landscape, an Amer-
ican businessman emerges from the
first-class cabin, spots a cluster of
Scout hats and the boys' red-white-
and-blue "U.S.A." sweatshirts.
"Where have you been?" he asks.
Informed of their "Ambassadorship
'96" trip, the businessman flashes the
"thumbs up" sign and says enthusias-
tically: "Way to go, guys."
Later, he returns, handing the
Scoutmaster a magazine advertise-
ment for motivational posters, includ-
ing one that says, "Leadership: the in-
stilling of vision in the generation to
follow."
Pointing to the word "leadership,"
the businessman tells the Scoutmast-
er: "That's [a description of] your boys,
right there."
Greg Ireland is right. Scouting sure
is exciting. ■
Scoutmaster of Troop 266, Dave Work-
man is a former newspaper reporter
and editor. He currently serves as di-
rector of communications for the
Washington State Department of Nat-
ural Resources.
