The word Purgatory means acute misery or a place of
temporary punishment But for 400 Explorers
Purgatory means nothing but fun and excitement
at southwestern Colorado's first-rate ski resort.
Jennifer came to Purgatory with 11
other members of her ski post at La
Habra High School. Pati Rivas is
president of the post.
"We started planning for this trip
back in September," Pati said. "Our
post meets once a week at school
where we talk about ski trips and plan
money raising projects. We earned
about $350 for this trip from bake
sales."
Kym Horton, who is vice-president
of the La Habra post said she didn't
even mind the 18-hour bus ride from
California. "It was a lot more fun than
I thought it would be." As for what
she thought of Purgatory, "The
scenery is spectacular, and it's great
not having to wait in lift lines."
The Ski Week schedule didn't lose
momentum at 4 P.M. when the chair
lifts shut down for the day. After a
final run on the mountain, the Ex-
plorers boarded shuttle buses for the
trip back to their four-star guest
quarters, the Tamarron Lodge.
At Tamarron, it didn't take the
weary youths long to discover the
luxury of the lodge's hot tub and
whirlpool. What a great way to
relieve the shock absorber pain that
comes with a hard day of skiing
packed powder.
After dinner the week's busy line
up of entertainment included a talent
show, nightly film series, and a new
wave costume dance that kept every-
body hopping.
On the last day of skiing the Pur-
gatory staff organized a barbecue
picnic at the base of Pitchfork race
course. Then, with the sawtooth
Needle mountains as a backdrop,
Jerry Chase, national director of the
U.S. Explorer Ski Association,
awarded medals to the week's top
competitors.
Sandy Aitchison of Irvine, Calif.,
and Johan Zethraeus, an exchange
student from Sweden, won gold
medals as women's and men's overall
champions. David Tebo and Laura
Samuelson took first-place honors in
the cross-country biathlon, sponsored
by Crosman Airguns.

at the end of Ski
