In Winston-Salem, N.C.,
Troop 716 collects its
millionth pound of glass
to be recycled.
a Scout for two years. He and his grand-
mother keep a box in the car trunk in case
they spot any bottles in the street. "We
just pick them up anywhere we can find
them," Jason said.
Lome Biles, 17, has been in the troop
six years. "I walk around my neighbor-
hood and collect bottles... whenever I see
them on the ground," he said. "It really
helps keep the neighborhood clean."
The project started small, David
Moore said, although troop leaders
wanted something that "wouldn't be a
one-shot deal."
"We didn't start out with a goal in
mind," admitted Earl Shelton, "We just
thought it would be a good project for the
Scout troop to do... It just grew and grew
and grew."
The first load was 1,345 pounds. Since
All Scouts in Troop 716 learn that before
the smashing begins, the goggles go on.
then, the troop has made more than 200
trips to Owens-Brockway on Old U.S. 52
south of Winston-Salem. "And I've got a
record of every little bit we carried in,"
Shelton said. "We got one cent a pound
for it then."
The troop was one of the early local
recyclers, Stebbins said. "They were one
of the few consistent people who would
bring it to us," he said.
During the drive's peak years in the
late 1970s and early 1980s the troop often
took in more than 100,000 pounds a year.
Gathering that much glass required more
than a few Scouts picking up bottles off
the street. People at several organizations,
as well as church members and neigh-
bors, pitched in. Word spread.
