Campaigning Under the
Checkered Flag

"GENTLEMEN, START your en-
gines."
Those are the famous words that
begin every Indy 500 race. But as far
as the Explorers who gathered in the
speedway city last May were con-
cerned, the phrase might more ap-
propriately have been, "Gentlemen,
start your campaigns."
The 1,000 Explorers and their Ad-
visors had barely arrived in Indian-
apolis for the 11th National Explorer
Congress before the race was under-
way to elect six regional chairmen
and then choose one from that group
as the next National Explorer Pres-
ident.
Besides politics the four-day con-
gress schedule was jam-packed with
program seminars, an ExplorExpo,
dances, and a visit to the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway to watch practice
runs for the Memorial Day race.
"I hope I find time to do it all," said
a first-time congress delegate as he
reviewed the events schedule in the
lobby of the primary congress hotel,
the Hyatt Regency. "I don't want to
miss a thing."
The campaigning for regional
chairmen elections began early Tues-
day morning. Armed with step lad-
ders, masking tape, and hundreds of
campaign posters, workers lined up
inside the dining hall of the Indian-
apolis Convention Center. Opposite
them stood their objective—a 300-
foot-long, 15-foot-high vacant wall.
The game plan was simple: On
signal run across the room and claim
as much wall space as possible to
plaster signs and pictures of your can-
didate. Within 45 seconds not one
square foot of unpostered space re-
mained.
Wednesday morning the delegates
grouped by regions and met in sepa-
rate caucus rooms to elect their
