SCHOLARSHIP
PROGRAM
SEEKS
HIGH SCHOOL
LEADERS
High school seniors with excep-
tional leadership skills are encour-
aged to compete for more than
$200,000 in scholarships this fall in the
national Century III Leaders pro-
gram. Applications, which must be
completed by October 21, may be
obtained through local high school
principals' offices starting in mid-
September.
The Century III Leaders program
is sponsored by the National As-
sociation of Secondary School Prin-
cipals, which represents more than
35,000 secondary school administra-
tors. The program is designed to
encourage today's young people to
think not only about the challenges
they will face as adults but also how
those challenges should be handled.
Students are judged on their
leadership abilities, school and com-
munity involvement, and awareness
of current events.
To enter the 1984 Century III
Leaders competition, high school
seniors must obtain an application
from their principal when classes re-
sume this fall. (All high schools are
mailed entry kits early in September;
however, general information is
available by writing Century III
Leaders, Box 33008, Washington,
D.C. 20033). After completing the
application and preparing a "Projec-
tion for Innovative Leadership" on a
particular challenge facing the nation
in its third century, each applicant will
take a current events exam.
The selection process begins at the
local high school level in each state
and the District of Columbia. School
winners advance to the state level
E12
where the top contenders are inter-
viewed by a selection committee and
two winners (and two runners-up)
are named in each state. The winners
get $1,500 scholarships and all-ex-
pense paid trips to the national Cen-
tury III Leaders conference (March
2-5, 1984) in Colonial Williamsburg,
Va., where additional scholarships
are awarded, including a $10,000 top
prize. Runners-up at the state level
each receive $500 scholarships.
While in Williamsburg, Century III
Leaders hear noted national speakers
and participate in seminars and dis-
cussion groups. They also develop
recommendations on specific prob-
lems which are forwarded to the
White House.
Funding for Century III Leaders is
provided by Shell Companies Foun-
dation.
TWO GROUPS
RECEIVE
SPURGEON
AWARDS
For their outstanding contributions
to youth, the National Ski Patrol
System Inc., and the Drug Enforce-
ment Administration of the U.S.
Department of Justice have been
named 1983 recipients of Exploring's
William H. Spurgeon III Awards.
Presented annually since 1971, the
Spurgeon Awards are named in
memory of a California business ex-
ecutive who was one of the principal
architects of today's Exploring pro-
gram. This year's honorees join more
than 60 organizations which have
been similarly recognized in the past.
NATIONAL
SKI PATROL
for working with Explorers who
serve as junior ski patrol members,
and for involving Explorers in the
Winter Olympics. For the past five
years, the patrol has directed Ex-
plorer ski competitions and provided
regional advisers to work with local
BSA councils in organizing new Ex-
plorer posts.
Presentation of the award plaque to
the National Ski Patrol was made
during the group's annual meeting
June 23 in Fairbanks, Alaska.
