well packed
a gang of local Scouts
into his radio shack to
help them take part in
last October's Jam-
boree - on - the - Air.
When the kids left,
Caldwell praised
them saying. "I found them the most
disciplined and courteous people l have
ever worked with."
Eighteen-year-old ham and Scout Mike
Matzinger jammed the airways with JOTA
small talk and says, "1 find chatting to
other Scouts my age around the world lots
of fun."
Radio amateur John Wilcox hosted
Scouts from Troop 43, Pine City, N.Y.,
during the JOTA. Despite-language bar-
riers, the youngsters conversed with Scouts
in as distant locations as Chile and Costa
Rica. "I'm looking forward to next year,"
promised Wilcox.
Each year hams welcome members of
the BSA to speak with Scouts from all over
the world via shortwave radio during the
Jamboree-on-the-Air. Once again in 1980
the radio get-together provides the chance
to fashion new friendships and promote
world understanding. The date of the
JOTA is October 18 and 19 starting at 0001
Greenwich mean time and ending 2400
GMT.
Any licensed radio amateur may take
part himself and may invite others to join
in. So spot a local ham and ask if he would
allow your Scouts to join in the excitement
of the 23rd JOTA.
