Resources
for Parents
Here is a list of resources available to
parents for teaching children to become
critical viewers of television and encour-
aging them to read. All are free unless
otherwise noted.
A Family Guide to Critical Television
Viewing—An eight-page pamphlet pub-
lished by Public Television station WNET,
New York. It gives "10 steps for critical
television viewing" and includes a self-
quiz for family members and charts for
analyzing TV drama, news, and commer-
cials and for evaluating programs. Write
to: Education Department, WNET/Thir-
teen, 356 West 58th St., New York, N.Y.
10019.
Prime Time Program Study Guides—
School and family discussion guides to
selected programs; published monthly
during the school year. Each guide sug-
gests discussion resources and further
readings for from three to five specials
each month on both public and commer-
cial networks. Cost is $10 a year. Write
Prime Time School Television, 120 South
LaSalle St., Chicago, 111. 60603.
CBS Television Reading Program—Actual
TV program scripts are available for five
or six CBS specials during the school year;
each script has a parent's discussion guide.
The aim is to improve reading skills and
motivate children for further reading and
creative thinking. Scripts for the selected
programs are published about two weeks
before air time with funding from local
newspapers and businesses. Check your
local CBS affiliate for availability of
scripts.
Parent Participation TV Workshop
Handbook—Available to schools,
churches, community groups, and parents
who agree to organize a community
workshop at which parents and children
can learn how to use TV to open com-
munication with each other. The Work-
shop Handbook, which is published an-
nually by Teachers' Guides to Television
with funding from NBC, includes syn-
opses and family discussion guides for
about 10 NBC prime-time programs. In
addition, workshop organizers may
receive preview tapes of NBC specials,
books, records, program scripts, and arti-
cles by educators. Write to: Teachers'
Guides to Television, 699 Madison Ave.,
New York, N.Y. 10021.
