Tongue Twisters (from page 24)
the tutor,
'Is it harder to toot
Or to tutor two young tooters to
toot?' "
What is the shortest twister? "Truly
rural" seems too simple a phrase to be a
twister. Other short ones include: "Hath
Hazel asthma?" "Sixty-six sick chicks."
"Preshrunk shirt." "Peggy Babcock."
The most famous twister of all? What
else? "If a woodchuck could chuck wood,
how much wood would a woodchuck
chuck if a woodchuck could and would?
But if a woodchuck could and would
chuck wood, no reason why he should.
How much wood could a woodchuck
chuck if a woodchuck could and would
chuck wood?"
Another favorite is: "She sells sea-
shells down by the seashore." Actor Boris
Karloff had a lisp and used to recite that
one regularly
Actors have always used tongue twis-
ters. Sir Laurence Olivier reportedly
warmed up with a tongue twister before
facing an audience. His favorite twister:
"Betty Botter bought a bit of butter.
'But,' she said, 'this butter's bitter. If I put
it in my batter, it will make my batter
bitter. But a bit of better butter will make
my batter better.' So Betty Botter bought
a bit of better butter, and it made her
batter better."
Italian screen star Sophia Loren had to
learn English for her films. Her teacher
reportedly had her practice this one:
"Moses supposes his toeses are roses, but
Moses supposes erroneously. For Moses
he knowses his toeses aren't roses, as
Moses supposes his toeses to be."
They say the late Winston Churchill
took great delight in trying to master
tongue twisters. Still, it is difficult to
imagine the great British leader saying
"Theophilus Thistle" or one of the other
old favorites. "Strange strategic statis-
tics" might have been more his speed.
Lowell Thomas, the legendary news-
caster, was famous for his splendid diction
and relaxed style. He reportedly used to
warm up before going on the air by say-
ing: "The seething sea ceaseth and thus
the seething sea sufficeth us."
What is the most difficult tongue twis-
ter longer than one line? Try this one:
"Theophilus Thistle, the thistle-sifter,
sifted a sieve of unsifted thistles. If Theo-
philus Thistle, the thistle-sifter, sifted a
sieve of unsifted thistles, where is the
sieve of unsifted thistles Theophilus This-
tle, the thistle sifter, sifted?"
If you can say that without a mistake,
you have a talented tongue.
