personal computer (for most people
that means either an IBM-compatible
"PC" or an Apple Macintosh) equipped
with a modem, which allows you to con-
nect to (in most cases) a standard tele-
phone line.
Get the fastest modem you can buy,
at least 14,400 bits per second, but
preferably 28,800 bps. (Unless you
have more than one phone line, friends
and family should get ready for lots of
busy signals—you can't use call waiting
while you're online.)
Think of your PC and modem as the
vehicle that gets you online. To choose
which road to take, you have two basic
options:
• a commercial online service like
America Online, CompuServe, Prodi-
gy, or WOW!
• an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
Online services
Online services offer unique content,
user-friendly on-screen menus, and
help systems to aid you in finding what
you're looking for.
All offer password-protected special
controls so that parents can restrict
children from accessing areas the par-
ents consider inappropriate.

(Top) Check out the latest BSA in-
formation, including news about
the 1997 National Scout Jambo-
ree, at http://www.bsa.scouting,
org. (Center) Socks, the White
House cat, gives tours of the Presi-
dent's house at http://www.l.
whitehouse.gov/WH/kids/html/
home.html. (Above) America On-
line is the nation's largest online
service, with 6.5 million members.
Commercial services also offer areas
especially created for children, like
America Online's "kids only" section.
They're safe, contain youth-interest re-
sources like Nintendo Power, Comp-
ton's Encyclopedia, and the KidBiz
Invention Connection, and typically in-
volve games, familiar characters, and a
learning activity.
Some, like Nintendo's site on Amer-
ica Online (and its Internet site http://
www.Nintendo.com), are a combination
of a commercial for the company's
products along with tips and tricks for
game players.
Prodigy offers separate bulletin
boards for kids and parents. Bulletin
boards, like forums and Internet news-
groups, allow people with common in-
terests to post and respond to notices.
America Online has a number of
kids-oriented forums, including one
called Compukids that lets children get
computer help from adults and other
children. AOL has also teamed up with
Parenting magazine to create the Par-
enting Magazine Online area, where
parents can exchange messages, par-
ticipate in live chats, and read articles
and special reports from the maga-
zine's editorial staff.
