Louisiana Wins Big
On White River
Louisiana posts paddled away with
all five first places in the 1981 Na-
tional Invitational Explorer White
River Canoe Race, sponsored by the
Quawpaw Area Council of Little
Rock, Ark.
Scores of experienced and novice
canoers from several states competed
in the three-day event Aug. 5-7, held
along an 18-mile stretch of the pic-
turesque White River, in Bull Shoals
State Park.
Post 517 of New Iberia, La., won
both the open class and cruising
events, while Post 579, also of New
Iberia, took first place in the girls
class. Posts 180 and 182 of Bogalusa,
La., placed first in the coed and boys
classes respectively.
Post 671 of St. Louis, Mo., took
second place in both the girls and coed
class events.
Michigan Post
Receives Award
Post 603 of Kalamazoo, Mich., has
won a national award for helping the
handicapped.
Members of the post, chartered to
the Whirlpool Corp., created four
electronic devices designed to meet
the needs of specific patients. None of
the devices was available commer-
cially, according to post Advisor John
A. Adams.
They included an electronic timer
designed to buzz every 30 seconds to
remind a patient to swallow, a buzzer
that signals when a crippled child is
walking properly, cables allowing an-
other child to control battery-operat-
ed toys from a wheelchair, and a
switch tripped by a head motion for a
boy who cannot use his hands.
The post's work earned it a fifth-
place prize in the Colgate-Palmolive
Co.'s 1980-81 "Help Young America
Campaign," The post received a cer-
tificate and a check for $50.
