Ski Week at Purgatory
Get set to join 1,500
Explorers in April
when they gather at
Purgatory Ski Base
in Colorado's San Juan
Mountains for a week
of skiing competition
and cold-weather fun.
THEY CALL IT dazzling . . . awe-
some . . . extraordinary . . . out of this
world! It's the renowned ski resort of
Purgatory—the spectacular scene of
the 1982 National Explorer Ski Week
competition.
Famed for its breath-taking pan-
oramic view, natural beauty, bright
sun, moderate temperatures, and
powdery trails, Purgatory will play
host to some 1,500 enthusiastic Ex-
plorer skiers April 4-9, as they test
their strength and skill in Alpine and
Nordic ski events.
This year's throng of participants is
expected to be nearly twice as large as
last year, when approximately 800
Explorers challenged the slopes at
Purgatory in Exploring's first annual
National Ski Week.
Competition will be offered at all
ability levels, from beginners to ad-
vanced skiers, according to Jerry
Chase, chairman of the National Ex-
ploring Ski Association.
And Purgatory is the ideal spot for
such a wide range of ability levels. It
has the variety of trails, bowls, and
powder glades to comfort beginners,
delight intermediates, and test the
ability of the most daring experts. Its
35 miles of maintained trails, blanket-
ed by an average annual snowfall of
300 inches, provide something for
everyone. One-fourth of its area is
considered suitable for beginners,
while 50 percent is classified as inter-
mediate, and 25 percent as advanced.
Lodging for all Explorer Ski Week
participants will be at the Tammaron
Conference Center Resort in Duran-
go, Colo., just a short distance from
Purgatory. All participants will be
housed in comfortable, condomin-
ium-style accommodations, featuring
such amenities as an indoor swim-
ming pool, tennis courts, and a fully
equipped exercise room.
Sponsored by the U.S. Explorer Ski
Association, a task force of the Na-
tional Exploring Committee of the
Boy Scouts of America, Ski Week is
open to all active Explorers, including
those who do not wish to compete in
its various events. Many attend mere-
ly to enjoy the exciting atmosphere
and dramatic sights of southwest
Colorado's San Juan Mountains.
National Explorer Ski Week suc-
ceeds a similar event which was held
annually for eight years prior to the
first Ski Week in 1981. It incorporates
the Explorer Winter Olympics, held
in cooperation with the U.S. Olympic
Committee, the U.S. Ski Association,
and the U.S. Biathlon Association,
and is aimed at the development of
future Olympic teams.
Last year, 16 young men and
women won gold, silver, and bronze
medals for the skills in the week of
competition. The men's overall win-
ner was Bill Locker of Orange, Calif.,
who captured two golds and one
silver. Women's overall winner was
Sarah Law of Las Vegas, N.M.
Ski Week activities include slalom
and giant slalom races, Alpine down-
hill events, and Nordic 5-kilometer
cross-country and 3x5 relay races.
Also scheduled is a biathlon, spon-
sored by Crosman Airguns.
In addition to the competitive
events on the mountain, Ski Week
will be highlighted by twilight din-
ners, a gala western barbecue,
dances, an entertainment night, and
other just-for-fun events.
There's still time for your post to
take part in the adventure of Ski
Week and the splendor of Purgatory.
