Pilots joke among
themselves that an
aviator who is good
will go to Oshkosh
after death. For the
400 Explorers at the
National Explorer
Fly-in, it was a case
of heaven on earth.
EVERY SUMMER the residents of
Oshkosh, Wis., scan the skies for the
annual migration. But the bevy that
descends on Oshkosh's Wittman
Field doesn't fly with flesh and
feather. Instead these birds take to
the air on wings of aluminum, canvas,
nylon, and fiberglass. They are par-
ticipants in the Experimental Aircraft
Association (EAA) Convention.
From designers of exotic home-
built planes to pilots of state-of-the-art
military aircraft to the simply curious,
nearly half a million people make the
