For men, the BSA 's sharp-looking uniform
spells out leadership. For Scouts, it invites
adventure. A two-tone combination, the
shirts are khaki tan; trousers and shorts are
olive drab green. All shirts have collars and
square-bottomed tails. Knee socks have red
elastic cuffs that eliminate the use of garters
and tabs.
and cotton, a full three ounces
heavier than before. The poly cotton
poplin shirts are a half-ounce
heavier. And mother will be pleased
to know that in addition to having
good soil release properties, all fab-
rics are easy-to-care-for perma-
nent press.
Women leaders also have new
uniform styles to choose from. Pale
yellow is the color of the women's
blouse. Cub Scout program leaders
may choose a dress, skirt, slacks, or
shorts in navy blue. Lady Scouters
in Boy Scouting, district, or council
positions will have the same choices
in olive drab green. Both have ac-
cessory options in hat styles and
Oscar de la Renta signature scarves.
All of the new uniforms are
available now at local stores that sell
Scouting equipment. And if your
Scouts haven't outgrown their
current uniforms yet, tell them
not to worry. It's perfectly all
right to wear the old uniform un-
til they need a new one.
The Scout uniform has long
been an important aspect of the
Scouting program. When the
Scouting movement began in
America back in 1910, its foun-
ders gave much attention to cre-
ating a uniform that would
establish immediate recognition for
the organization's members. Out-
doorsman Dan Beard and illustrator
Ernest Thompson Seton are given
credit for designing the first BSA
uniform.
In 1922 the uniform was mod-
ified to be more practical in the
field. It consisted of a hat,
coat, shirt, breeches, and stock-
ings. Total cost was less than
$12.
When Cub Scouts joined the
movement in 1930, they were
given navy blue uniforms con-
sisting of knickers with long
stockings and a jersey pullover.
It was not until 1947 that full length
trousers wiih western styling re-
placed the knickers. ■
