A dealer of imported automo-
biles has demonstrated what could
be done on the local level to
supplement national advertising.
The Chicago dealer for Rolls-
Royce and Bentley autos Invested
approximately $2,000 to buy a
full page advertisement in a local
paper. At the end of the week
an official of the automobile
company reported that the single
advertisement had sold $100,000
worth of his cars. He added that
"more than likely another $350,000
in sales' would result from the
ward him. "And here's a New
Testament for your buddy to
read!"
The young bandits — shocked
and speechless—meekly accepted
the Scriptures. "God will punish
you for this, but we'll pray for
you that you might be saved."
Returning my now-empty wal-
let, the highwaymen ordered us
to drive on. Then, doubling back
on the road, they disappeared
in the darkness, failing to ask
for watches, rings, purse, type-
writer and other valuables we
carried.
Why does the presence of a
Bible halt the actions of a rob-
ber, hush the lips of a profaner
and sober a drunk? Why do men
fear the Bible and respect it?
Because they recognizc the
Bible and realize they will be
judged by its sacred pages. Jesus
said, "The word that I have
spoken, the same shall judge him
at the last day" (John 12:48).
Perhaps these two young high-
men will repent of their sins and
turn to God. They have in their
hands "the holy scriptures, which
are able to make thee wise unto
salvation through faith which is
in Christ Jesus" (II Timothy
3:15).

Of course this is a spectacular
example of what can be done
with local newspaper advertising.
However, it should be a reminder
to local dealers in any size city
that'even the best national ad-
vertising does not create maxi-
mum sales.
The manufacturers of Rolls-
Royce have been publishing some
excellent advertising in national
media. It has helped to develop
Interest in the automobile and,
no doubt, resulted in a trickling
of local sales. But, as the Chica-
go dealer proved, a local, more
select, more urgent medium was
needed to transform interest into
action.
A potential customer will "think
about" a product almost indefi-
nitely before he makes a pur-
chase.. Certain conditions have
to be established before his think-
ing materializes into action. The
local newspaper is ideally suited
to this task of directing an in-
terested prospect to the point of
purchase.
The size of the newspaper page
makes it possible to give complete
details on any product. Only the
local newspaper records informa-
tion on the local dealer and the
conditions of purchase. The local
newspaper, better than any other
medium, is able to slant appeals
to the special characteristics of
a local market.
Only the local newspaper is
able to cover the local community
completely .selecting all potential
prospects, bringing them to local
shops.

Legion meeting
here tonight
Harold Gist Post No. 344 of the
American Legion will meet in re-
gular session Thursday night, Oct.
2nd, at 8:00 o'clock in Legion
Hall. All members and friends are
urged to attend.
School board to
meet Oct. 7th
The Claude Independent School
board is scheduled to meet Tues-
day night, October 7th instead
of the 14th (second Tuesday,
which is a regular time). The
meeting was set up a week be-
cause several of the members
would have had to be absent and
out of town on the second Tues-
day night.
