XVII. VOTER REGISTRATION LISTS
A. Can give you more information than you imagine- age,
precinct & years lived in county & state
XVIII. LODGE RECORDS
A. Masonic records may have something you have been
searching for- GRAND LODGE OF TEXAS, WACO DRIVE, WACO, Texas
State Headquarters.
B. By Early Candlelight- History of Milam Lodge #2- Roster
in back of active and inactive members. Remarks column
occasionally gives date of birth and death,- depends on
the secretary of the lodge just how complete their records are.
XIX. DISTRICT COURT MINUTES
A. Check index to District Court Minutes. I found that a man
I had been searching for had been murdered and a man tried
for his murder in 1845! No wonder he didn't show up in the
1850 census.
XX. PRINTED SOURCES
A. More & more county histories are being printed.
1. Often no index- or incomplete index.- Check to see if
index is complete...
2. Sometimes contain muster rolls, tax lists or index to
census
3. Some have sections on prominent settlers. Many new Co.
Histories contain excellent write-ups. Use these write-ups
as a spring board for further research. Often they contain
mistakes and unless you can contact the individual who
turned in the write-ups, you may not know if the facts
were documented or written from memory or family hear-say.
B. MUG BOOKS
1. Biographical sketches with pictures of some,
2. Use with caution- individual paid for his biographical
write-up and he put in only what he wanted to say--if
your family is not written up it does NOT mean that they
weren't living in the county at the time.
Co LINEAGE BOOKS
1. FOUNDERS & PATRIOTS- D.R.T. lineages, those who were
in Texas prior to 19 February 1846 (2 volumes)
2. CITIZENS OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS- published by Texas
State Genealogical Society, cards turned in by members,
NO PROOF! - Use with caution.
3. Do A. R. LINEAGE BOOKS- Ancestors for whom Revolutionary
service has been proven.
4. LINEAGE BOOK OF COLONIAL DAMES OF XVII CENTURY*
Ancestors before 1700.
5. LINEAGE BOOK OF COLONIAL DAMES OF AMERICA- not as
early as CDXVII,
Check to see if there is a local genealogical society in
the county that you are interested in, if so, join their society.
Read their publications and often the articles published in their
quarterly or newsletter will contain information about early
settlers of that area. Most of them contain queries and it is a
good way to contact others who are working on the same ancestor
that you are.
