PANOLA COUNTY COMMISSIONERS' COURT MINUTES, BOOK A
First Commissioners' Court, Sept. 1, 1846
Present: John Allison, Chief Justice; Commissioners: Richard Golden, James
Williams, Terrel Henson, and Charles Moorman. Sheriff, W. R. Standifer;
Clerk, J. H. Anderson.
Ordered and adjudged that Pulaski be county site, pro tem, until the county
site of Panola County be established, as required by law. Ordered by court
that ferriage for crossing river at Pulaski for man and horse when river is
within banks be one dime; when out of banks, two dimes for same.
For crossing a wagon, ferryman shall receive 50 when river is within banks
and $1.00 when out of banks; carriages shall pay 25; footmen 5; loose
horses and cattle, 5 for 3.
(1st road ordered) Terrel Henson, on behalf of citizens, prayed court to
order review for a road to connect the road from Henderson to Brewster's
Bluff. Court ordered review by Perviance Williams, Joseph Collins, M. G.
Baxtrell, Edward Sweat, and Dickson.
Washington Morris appointed Overseer of road from Rusk County to Brewster's
Bluff, by Shepherd's, commencing at branch west of Newel Walton's and work
to county line; following hands on work crew: Sol Wood, Hiram Wood, William
Barbee, Hugh Shepherd, William F. Nelson, James H. Smith, John Morris, Sam
Timmins (?), R. G. Holt, I. M. Donald, Washington Morris, Parson Reed's
Hands.
Hugh Develin ordered Overseer of Shepherd Road commencing at 5-mile post,
moving to the branch west of Newel Walton's. All hands south of Irons Bayou
are required to work on said road.
Ordered that Seth Kenady be appointed Overseer of road from Sabine River to
5-mile post, and all hands south of said road work on same.
