I New Buildings
& Renovations
Caldwell Hall
Caldwell Fine Arts Building was originally dedicated and
opened on September 14, 1923. The building underwent a threeyear
renovation and restoration that brought back its original
beauty and charm. Caldwell Hall celebrated its 80"' birthday
with a dedication ceremony on September 14, 2003, opening
the restored building once again for public viewing. In 2004, the
building was selected by Preservation Texas, a statewide partner
with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, to receive a
Historic Rehabilitation Award.
lF CallGreat pains were taken to preserve the beauty and integrity of
the original design while still attending to the creature comforts
of the 21" century faculty, staff, and students. For many years the
grandeur of Caldwell Hall was hidden, but now it is visible to all.
It is truly a beautiful and functional education facility.
Caldwell's renovation not only restored its original charm and
beauty, but it also provided much-needed classrooms, practice
rooms, recital areas, and office space to continue the extraordinary
HSU music tradition for future generations.Java City
Gourmet coffees, smoothies, sandwiches, and internet access are just a sampling of the offerings at the
new Java City Coffee Shop, which opened for business over the summer. A grand opening was held July 29,
2004.
Java City provides not only a variety of coffees, but breakfast pastries, deli sandwiches, salads, soups and
desserts. Catering services are also available.
Java City brews up a modern and inviting atmosphere with a
high-tech topping. The business is one of only a few Abilene locations
with WiFi (wireless internet service for laptops and personal digital
assistants).
The coffee shop takes on the look of the University in colors and
materials. It features HSU's traditional red brick exterior and a stately
tower over the entry.
Dr. Craig Turner said, "We are committed not only to excellence
in Christian higher education but providing our students and the
community with services that meet the needs of today's modern
marketplace."10 BRONCO HAR)IN-SIMMO()NS U NIVERSIIY 2003-2004
