Thousands of school children once
again descended upon the 40 Acres for
Western Heritage Day.
During the day they learned how our
rich western heritage is still alive today.
Eating biscuits, roping, riding horses,
watching a campfire and learning how a
cowboy cook feeds his hungry crew, was
just a part of this year's program.
As the students wandered around, they
were met by hundreds of volunteers and
shown various frontier skills.
In 1981 Western Heritage Day began aspart of the City of Abilene's
Centennial celebration.
The lawn of the Sid Richardson
Science Building, was the site of
the first Western Heritage Day,
but it was only open to the HSU
community.
The late Lawrence Clayton
began the program along with
Randy Armstrong, Bill Curtis,
George Newman, B. W. Aston,
Dorothy Kiser, Charlene Archer
and the late Ira Taylor.28 BRONCO
