THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
by William Shakespeare and Ken Risch
March 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 1994
The first production of the Spring semester by the Department of Theatre was the classic comedy
of Shakespeare's, THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. This version of the script was updated by Ken
Risch to be performed as if it were on the radio. The Induction scene, which is usually cut from most
productions, was an actual episode from the classic television show, "The Honeymooners." The allusions
made in the Induction scene become apparent as we move into the full production of SHREW
which is set in Post World War II Italy where Kate and Petruchio meet.
This modern dress version was presented via radio program on CBS Radio's Cavalcade of
Classics complete with commercials and songs which help to comment on the action of the play itself.
The central parts of Kate and Petruchio were played by Lauri Phillips and Stephen Madrid respectively.
Dr. Larry Wolz, professor of music and voice, played Baptista and sung a rousing rendition of "Funiculi,
Funicula" at the end of Act I, in addition to serving as Music Director for the show. Other major parts
were Bianca played by Laura Seaton, Jason Radcliffe as Lucentio, Jason Solis as Hortensio, Jennifer
Molpus as Gremio, Emily Maxwell as Grumio, Bryan Brigham as Tranio, David Lowe as Biondello,
and Nathan Brown as Vincentio.
The production was directed by Dr. James Ivey, designed by Mr. Larry Wheeler, costumes by
Laura Berkley, and choreography was by Cindy Mundschenk. The setting for the play involved building
our an extension into the auditorium of the Van Ellis Theatre for the SHREW sequences to be
played upon, while two sets on platforms of different heights were the settings for the "Honeymooners"
episode and the "Radio" sequences. The production was a very lighthearted look at this classic story of
the battle between the sexes. Audiences were delighted to see this 400 year old play given fresh insight
and a very entertaining production.
